Ride a dragonfly into the wasp swarm. You are a sprite no taller than a foxglove, and the whole meadow is at war.
In an ordinary wood and the meadow beside it, a field mouse is a horse and a dragonfly is a steed. This spring the wasps of the Paper Empire came and began a grey hive in the lightning-split oak, and Foxglove Keep is besieged.
Ride dragonfly cavalry over the long grass, bargain with the Beetle Clans, cross the pond by skater ferry, or raise a dragonfly from a nymph in the reeds. There are no humans here: only the fairy-kind, and the great insects of their world.
Tiny, regal, handsome warriors of the meadow, finely dressed and wingless, who ride dragonflies into the fight.

A sworn lancer of the Order of the Darter, who rides a bonded blue dragonfly into the wasp swarm with thorn-sword, reed lance and bark shield.
A stout defender who plants a thorn spear and a bark shield in front of a stem and holds it against whatever charges.
A quick skirmisher of the hedgerow who throws thorns, weaves glamours that confuse and vanishes before the answering blow lands.
A keeper of the old glimmer magic who burns, dazzles and mends with the light held in a dewdrop, wisp-kin and sprite and pixie alike.
A beast-friend of the long grass who rides a bonded field mouse, speaks with the small wild folk and fights with a sling and a hazel staff.
A gatherer of honey, clover and nettle who mends the wounded with salves and morning dew and stings back with a nettle-knife.
A scout of the reedbed and the long grass who shoots from cover with a grass-bow, marks the quarry for the party and never wastes an arrow.
The sprite crown under Queen Sorrel, besieged in Foxglove Keep. The keep hangs in the bells of a tall foxglove stand, and since the swarm came the ant thralls have dug at its stems while wasps hold the sky above. Proud and slow to beg for help, the Crown knows it cannot break the siege alone, and its queen must choose which price to pay. Lawful noble.
The dragonfly cavalry of the sprites, the last line in the air. The Order's riders fly out of the Darting Eyrie on darters, damsels and hawkers, but there are too few riders and too few dragonflies, and each lost mount is a year's work. Wing-Marshal Teasel sets the Order's trials. Lawful brave.
Wasps under the Paper Empress, come this spring to build a hive in the lightning-split oak. They strip the clover for a day's flight around it, take the red ants as thralls, and mean to make the meadow theirs before the first frost. The Empire is courting the Frog Court and its soldiers hold the sky above Foxglove Keep. Lawful cruel.
Stag, Dor and Rove clans, old and armoured, who live under the fallen birch. They fight for a price and keep every oath to the letter, and say a price twice before they agree. The wasps have taken the Rove clan's scouts, and the clans want them back before they will lend anything. Neutral exact.
The pixies of the hedgerow, loyal to friends and faithless to rules, who raid the wasps for fun. Their warren hides in a bramble mound, and the Bramble Jack keeps the court by wit and nerve. They will fly where a sprite on foot cannot follow, if the party is amusing enough. Chaotic good.
Brownie smiths and sappers who dig under the old hawthorn. They make armour of beetle- shell and thorn-steel, count tunnels by the pace and grudges by the year, and are politely implacable about both. They back the Crown with metal, if not with soldiers. Lawful practical.
Pond folk on the lily pads, sprites of the reed lineage, caught between the wasps and the frog who rules the water. Their skater ferries are the only road across the open water, and everyone wants them. They will lend them to the Crown, at a price in frog trouble. Neutral anxious.
The frog tyrant of the pond, who rules by appetite and sits on a sunken log ringed with water. Old Gulp is weighing a deal with the Paper Empress, and his enforcers watch the lanes. He has little love for anyone and a great deal for tribute. Neutral evil.
Wisp-kin elders of the Mushroom Ring, who keep the old light and the moth stables. They speak little and gently, and will bargain a hawk moth to a friend of the Order. Their glow is part of the old magic of the wood. Neutral wise.
